The Cliff of San Francesco: legendary rock

Right before the famous baia di Trentova (Trentova bay) there is a very evocative inlet, the San Francesco beach (or San Francesco bay) in Agropoli that is named after the cliff standing in front of it, where according to legend San Francesco begun preaching to fish and birds as local people would not listen to him.

DIVING IN THE SEA OF THE SAN FRANCESCO’S CLIFF

The beach is not that wide. It is a pebble beach so you better wear proper shoes. Right in front of the beach, in the middle of the crystal clear sea of Agropoli, there is the scoglio di San Francesco (San Francesco’s Cliff) with a cross on it. You can reach it by swimming.

The unique peculiarity of this cliff is that even coastal storms cannot sink it; it is always visible on the surface of water. According to legend, the sea cannot sink it for this cliff was meant to be San Francesco’s pulpit.
