During the Second World War, the sea area in front of Paestum hosted the allied troops landing known as “Operazione Avalanche” (Avalanche Operation), that caused the sinking and the loss of several landing crafts, including a Sherman tank and an ammunition ship. The tank lies at a depth of around 22 metres, completely intact. It lies on the bottom obliquely, with the cannon stick in the sand and the hatch open. The ship, instead, sank at a depth of around 12 metres, with its volatile cargo still in the hold and most of the hull out of the water. These  fragments of history are a real underwater museum, a unique and moving experience. Both the wrecks have turned into ideal habitats of several species, such as white groupers, diploduses, crabs and gray triggerfish.
