Montepertuso is the characteristic mountain with the “hole” (pertuso in dialect) that overlooks Positano (Monte Gambera), and the path to reach it is a beautiful walk between sky, sea and mountains in this magical place.
Let’s go trekking to Montepertuso in Positano!
According to legend, a terrible battle took place here between the Devil and the Madonna.
When in ancient times Mount Gambera was almost semi-deserted and there were very few inhabitants, the Devil wanted to test his strength and supremacy by trying to pierce the mountain with his hands. But the Madonna grazed the mountain, making him roll down among the rocks, where it is still believed that her imprint is.
This legendary fight between good and evil is still handed down today by the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, located in Montepertuso.
The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Montepertuso can also be reached by taking the bus from Positano city centre.
The trekking route to get from Positano to Montepertuso must start from Positano Beach and take one of the many small streets or stairways that are in front of it until you reach Lipariati, where a clearly visible staircase starts that reaches the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The actual path to Montepertuso is well signposted, from the church take via Pestella up to the Il Ritrovo restaurant in via Montepertuso 77. From here you continue to climb between steps and terraces up to the rock face with the famous hole, which overlooks Positano and Capri.
