Carditello Royal Palace

In San Tammaro, near Caserta, there is a place that was very dear to the Bourbons: the Reale tenuta di Carditello, also known as the Reggia di Carditello (Carditello Royal Palace), a mansion used to both raise selected horses and bovines and farm wheat and where the king loved to stay during hunting excursions.

People can visit the Carditello Royal palace’s rooms that have been renovated, such as the sala di Diana (Artemis room) with frescoes depicting the life of the hunter goddess, the sala dei paesaggi (landscapes room) and the library, the salone centrale (main hall) where the Bourbon parties were held, the sala della tavola matematica (math table room) and the sala delle quattro stagioni (four seasons room), the camera oscura (darkroom) and the Cappella dell’ascensione (Ascension Chapel) in neoclassical style.

Moreover, people can visit the meridiane di Carditello (Carditello’s sundials), that is 4 sundials, and the horse riding tracks outside the Palace, the biggest racetrack ever included in a royal residential complex.

The tour also includes the woods surrounding the estate: the eucalyptus tree wood and the Turkey oak wood. The eucalyptus tree wood offers a wellness itinerary that costs € 2,00 and includes the tour of the horse riding tracks; whereas, the Turkey oak wood houses a picnic area with tables that can be booked from 12:30 pm to 4.00 pm.

Nowadays, the Carditello Royal Palace houses many events, such as the Carditello Festival, a beautiful art festival.

The Carditello Royal Palace is in San Tammaro, near Capua and Santa Maria Capua Vetere.

To reach it from Caserta, drive towards Marcianise and take the SS7 state road towards Capua. Once you reach San Tammaro take the SP 230 provincial road up to the free car park in front of the Carditello estate.
