Five minutes walking from the Duomo (Cathedral), there is the stunning Donnaregina monumental complex of Naples.
It is a sumptuous piece of Neapolitan art that is often out of the popular tourist tours, but it is a true gem!
The Naples’ Donnaregina monumental complex consists of three elements: the old church, the new church and the diocesan museum.
The Santa Maria Donnaregina old church once belonged to the Franciscan nuns, then it was remodeled in Gothic-style as requested by Maria d’Ungheria, the wife of Carlo II d’Angiò, adding the magnificent headstone by the sculptor Tino di Camaino. Moreover, the old church is full of beautiful 4th century frescoes.
The sumptuous Santa Maria Donnaregina New Church, instead, was built in a Baroque-style as requested by the Poor Clare nuns in the 17th century.
It houses the Museo Diocesano (Diocesan Museum) of Napoli rich in paintings, frescoes, sculptures, gold and silver objects that are part of a priceless collection.
The complex often houses very interesting temporary exhibitions and events, such as plays, performances, concerts, that turn out even more interesting thanks to the beautiful setting of the Donnaregina complex.
