The tribute to the exploits of the Emperor Trajan

In the historic centre of Benevento there is the Arch di Trajan, a Roman triumphal arch that became the symbol of the Samnite city, celebrating the Emperor Trajan and his endeavours.

HISTORY OF THE ARCH

The arch was erected to celebrate the princeps optimus when via Traiana connecting Benevento to Brindisi was inaugurated.

This triumphal arch has been renovated more than once, because of the damages caused by bad weather and earthquakes. Nowadays, people can see the amazing decorations on the facades recalling the Emperor’s endeavours, the inscription dedicated to Trajan, the reliefs and the bas-reliefs.

The Arch of Trajan in Benevento is one of the best preserved arches in the world, thanks to the Lombards that embedded the arch in the city walls, naming it Porta Aurea (Golden Gate).
