San Leucio silk

The Complesso Monumentale del borgo di San Leucio (San Leucio hamlet’s Monumental Complex) houses the silk museum of Caserta, that illustrates the glorious ancient period when Federico IV di Borbone made this small town a key centre for trading thanks to the silk art.

In fact, the silk from San Leucio is worldwide famous and it has also conquered the Oval Office in USA, the Vatican, the Quirinale palace and many other important offices.

VISITING THE SILK MUSEUM

The San Leucio silk museum of Caserta consists of 3 departments: the ancient silk factory, that keeps all the machines used to produce silk such as 9 looms still working, the royal apartments of Federico IV who loved to stay close to the workers, and the royal gardens arranged on seven terraces.

Moreover, you can also visit the Casa del tessitore (textile worker’s house), a typical house where the skilled workers of the San Leucio silk factory used to live.

SMARTIP

Still today people can buy unique and original pieces made with the precious silk of San Leucio. There are many shops selling silk, such as Antiche leuciane, Tessitore, Antico opificio serico.

All the shops are not far from Piazza della Seta in the San Leucio hamlet.
