Pio Monte della Misericordia is a palace in Naples that houses wonderful works of art, including Caravaggio’s Seven Works of Mercy and the beautiful Picture Gallery.
The Pio Monte della Misericordia association has its roots in 1600, when a small group of Neapolitan nobles decided to commit themselves to helping the weakest and most needy by donating part of their assets.
Over time, many others joined them and gradually the charitable works became many, so much so that it was decided to establish a real association with a statute that still continues the work of assistance and charity today.
In the monumental palace of Pio Monte della Misericordia there is the seventeenth-century chapel, whose high altar houses the altarpiece made by Merisi, one of the greatest expressions of post-Renaissance painting, and the Seven Works of Mercy by Caravaggio, as well as other important minor canvases.
The staircase leads to the Quadreria, an art gallery with one of the most important private collections in Italy that combines the classic with the modern.
Those who request it can access the Library and the Historical Archive on the second floor.
Pio Monte is located right between the Duomo and Castel Capuano.
And if your stomach is rumbling, on Via Tribunali try Cala la Pasta, a rustic little place where you can taste phenomenal pasta dishes.
