Tammaro Valley in Benevento

Among beautiful villages, uncontaminated nature and Samnite history

Samnite nature

The suggestive Tammaro valley takes its name from the river of the same name that created it, the Tammaro river, hosts in its vast territory incredible places such as the WWF oasis of Campolattaro, the medieval villages, the Botanical Garden of Sannio, the Upper valley of the Tammaro river with its paths of the Regio tratturo route.

This valley is a little-known and yet to be discovered Samnite pearl, and is located north of Benevento and on the border with Molise.

WWF OASIS OF LAKE CAMPOLATTARO

In the municipalities of Morcone and Campolattaro, right on the border with the Molise lands, there is the WWF oasis of Campolattaro that extends from the artificial lake of the same name to the village of Morcone.

The oasis has been a protected area since 2003 to preserve the ecosystem of the wetland, and is crossed by many paths, some excellent for cycling.

On the right bank of the Campolattaro lake there is the WWF visitor center where on Sunday mornings there will be volunteers to welcome you and give you information on the paths of the oasis that can be traveled, on the other days of the week instead you can just call and book a visit on the website wwf.it by searching for Oasi del lago di Campolattaro.

Guarding the oasis and the Tammaro valley is the medieval village of Morcone where it is possible to visit the historic center literally clinging to Mount Mucre, and the ruins of the Castle that dominate the town.

If you are hungry, in Morcone you can taste some excellent homemade pasta seasoned with meat sauce.

TREKKING THE WIDOW’S BRIDGE

From Strada Corvareccia to Morcone, a 3 km trail starts that arrives in the locality of Macchia, to be precise, in the rural village of Cappelletti.

Along the way, you will encounter the widow’s bridge, a bridge that stands over the Ceca stream, built, according to legend, by a widow whose only son had died swept away by the waters of the stream.

The bridge is immersed in greenery and surrounded by two waterfalls, one upstream and one downstream: a truly evocative place and an easy trail suitable for everyone.

SMARTIP

Among the villages to visit in the Tammaro Valley area, don’t miss Pesco Sannita which hosts the Maitine Zoo, Circello, Colle Sannita, Santa Croce del Sannio.

UPPER TAMMARO RIVER VALLEY

The territory of the villages of Morcone and Campolattaro is part of the Upper valley of Tammaro river, crossed by the tracks of the tratturi, which would be the ancient paths used by shepherds in the transhumance that today are nature trails to be traveled on foot, on horseback or by bike.

The most beautiful tratturi are those of the royal tratturo of the transhumance and that of the royal tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela.

In Campolattaro, not far from the lake and the oasis, we find the botanical garden of Sannio OrtAntico where, thanks to Mr. Vincenzo, ancient cultivars of fruit and edible plants embellished with ceramic nomenclature grow. To visit the garden, reservations are required at 3393860810 or by sending an email to aliseatammarogmail.com
