Vergiliano Park in Piedigrotta – Naples
Mergellina Park with the tombs of Virgil and Leopardi
The Vergiliano Park in Piedigrotta is located right near the Mergellina station stop (metro line 2) and behind the Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta, not to be confused with the Parco Virgiliano which is located in Posillipo.
The Vergiliano park in Piedigrotta is located in Salita della Grotta 20, and is a small park full of greenery and history with free admission.
Walking in the greenery and silence of this small park you will come across the tomb of Giacomo Leopardi, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view, and where there is the entrance to the Crypta Neapolitana, an ancient gallery dating back to the Augustan age.
Near the Crypta there is also the mausoleum that contains the remains of the poet-magician Virgil, access to which is allowed by flights of small well-kept but steep stairs.
Near the Vergiliano park there are the 13 descents of Sant’Antonio that connect Posillipo to the Mergellina seafront. At the top of the “13 descents” there is the terrace of Sant’Antonio, also called “‘o balcone ‘e Napule” from which the view of the city is surreal, it seems like a painting.
