The guardian of underground Neapolis
The complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples is the witness of the Greek, Roman and medieval Neapolis.
The complex includes the Basilica, the excavations of the Neapolis Sotterrata, the museum, the chapter house and the Sisto V rooms.
The Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples is beautiful and in Gothic style, it is one of the oldest in Naples and it is precisely in its bowels that we find the excavations of the underground Neapolis.
The archaeological area includes what was the Greek agora first and the Roman Forum then, significant is the macellum, that is the Roman market.
Adjacent to the excavations is the Opera di San Lorenzo Maggiore museum witness to 25 centuries of Neapolitan history.
To the east of the cloister of San Lorenzo are the chapter house and the fourteenth-century Gothic portal.
The Neapolis sotterrata is not part of the Naples underground circuit, therefore the route is not claustrophobic.
