Abbot’s Castle of Castellabate

On the upper side of Castellabate there is the fortress the town is named after, that was built in 1123 as requested by the Abbott of Cava, San Costabile Gentilcore.

The Abbot’s castle of Castellabate became the fortress of the Sant’Angelo hill; in time, it was occupied by Suevians, Angevins and Aragoneses and it was eventually turned into a stately home during the 17th century. 

Today, the castle is completely renovated and people can visit the museo dell’Antiquarium (Antiquarium Museum), the stables, the sala normanna (Norman room), the courtyard with the tanks, the fortified tower, the Aragonese sheltered walkway that connects the four towers and the great hall. 

Moreover, the Abbot’s Castle of Castellabate houses a permanent exhibition and the library, and it often hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. The upper floor of the fortress offers a breathtaking view of Santa Maria and surroundings. 

Palazzo Gentilcore is set in a 17th-century building in the center of Castellabate, some rooms boast views of the garden or the city.
