Between Santa Maria di Castellabate and Paestum there is the beautiful city of Agropoli, also known as the “high city” since its position, overlooking the sea, favoured the construction of Byzantine fortifications first and Lombardic and Saracen defensive walls later on.
Visit Agropoli! A city rich in history and legends, and you can easily notice it as you enter the beautiful historic centre, at the end of the salita degli scaloni (stairway’s ascent), with its 17th century gate guarded by 5 rock blackbirds, that is also the door to the ancient hamlet of Agropoli.
Here you will find the Castello angioino aragonese (Aragonese Angevin Castle), a fortress guarding the history of Agropoli with its walls, from the Byzantine edification, through the Angevin and Aragonese restoration, to the Napoleonic period.
Within the historic centre area there is also the Chiesa della Madonna di Costantinopoli (Costantinople’s Virgin Mary Church), the guardian of the city and fishermen. This is a church overlooking the sea, with a view that includes the city’s harbour and the Amalfi Coast as well.
Take the downhill path that from the historic centre leads to the harbour of Agropoli, where you can take a walk among the small clubs and reach the Palazzo civico delle arti (Arts Public Palace) that houses the small Museo archeologico (Archaeological Museum); you can visit both the Museum and the Castle with just one ticket.
Moreover, the coast of Agropoli has many watchtowers, such as the Torre di San Marco (San Marco Tower) and the Torre di San Francesco (San Francesco Tower).
Not far from the historic centre, in via Flavio Gioia 16, there is the Beer Hunters pub that offers a great selection of beers and sandwiches.
The seafront of Agropoli is a 3 km walk that is perfect to enjoy the sunset. It includes the baia di Trentova (Trentova Bay), that is named after the cliff of the same name, and the small baia di San Francesco (San Francesco Bay).
Near the seafront of Agropoli there is the spiaggia di San Marco (San Marco beach), a very popular wide strip of sand. Northward, towards the Paestum area, the coast is sandy and crossed by streams and reaches the Parco archeologico di Paestum (Paestum Archaeological Park) area.
Agropoli is around 50 km away from Salerno.
