In the small mountain village of Calabritto (Avellino) there is a path easy to walk that leads to the small but still evocative Santuario della Madonna del fiume Calabritto (Fiume Calabritto Virgin Mary Shrine), a shrine surrounded by nature nestled in a karstic grotto.
According to legend, when the Meria creek overflew, it destroyed the nearby small chapel. Everything was gone, except for the Virgin Mary painting, that was untouched.
That’s why people decided to build a shrine dedicated to that miraculous Virgin Mary.
At the end of October in Calabritto the sagra della castagna (chestnut celebration) takes place: a funny festival among roast chestnuts, Irpinia typical products and folk music.
To reach the small Fiume Calabritto Virgin Mary shrine, you have to walk along Via Ponticchio, in Calabritto. This path is surrounded by nature and reaches several interesting places, such as the Cascata di Bard’natore (Bard’natore Waterfall) and the Fontana dei palummi (Pigeons Fountain) where you can refill your water bottle.
This is a very evocative path that offers breathtaking views of springs ans waterfalls, such as the Cascate di Calabritto (Calabritto Waterfalls).
In less than two hours you will reach the calcareous grotto housing the Fiume Calabritto Virgin Mary shrine, a place made of shade, peace and nature.
