The Normans in Bisaccia

In the small village of Bisaccia there is the majestic Ducal castle dating back to the Norman period, that houses the Museo archeologico (Archaeological Museum) on the ground floor.

To reach Bisaccia from Avellino drive along the E842 highway and take the exit signposted Lacedonia, then proceed towards Contrada Santa Veronica along via Panoramica up to Nuova Bisaccia then turn left onto via XXIII luglio. Proceed along via Roma and you will reach Corso Romuleo in Bisaccia.

THE FREDERICK’S NORMAN DUCAL CASTLE

From Corso Romuleo, after the Cathedral, reach via Colletta where the Bisaccia Ducal Castle is.

This castle was built by the Normans to serve as a fortress, but then Federico II di Svevia reconstructed it and turned it into a noble residence.

On the castle’s ground floor there is the Museo Archeologico di Bisaccia (Bisaccia Archaeological Museum), that keeps the remains dating back to the prehistoric and archaic periods found in the Cimitero Vecchio (Old Cemetery) area.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm and from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm. On Monday, it is open from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm.
