Nort of Caserta there is the majestic Matese mountain range, as ancient as dinosaurs; the Miletto, Gallinola and Mutria are its highest peaks.
The Matese park includes the mountain complex as well as fluvial valleys, canyons, lakes, high-altitude plants and animals, mountain hamlets viewing and keeping thousand-year long history.
The Matese park is a very vast territory. Firstly, you could visit the Matese lake, where you can have a walk or a picnic at one of the several equipped areas around the lake, such as the Campeggio Falode area that includes the ranch, where you can go horse riding or milk the cows.
You can easily reach the lake from the Miralago plateau, that is a plateau surrounded by beech trees that offers a breathtaking view of the Matese mountains. Not far from the Miralago plateau, there is the Le Janare mountain lodge, where you can have some delicious sandwiches and traditional food made with 0 km products.
North of the Matese lake there is the Letino lake with a park and a hamlet to visit, and the Cipresseta di Fontangreca within the hamlet of the same name, that is a cypress wood crossed by the Sava stream digging rocks and creating waterfalls and puddles: a place like no other.
South of the park, instead, there are the Gole di Caccaviola (Caccaviola Gorges) that you can visit together with the Matese Escursioni staff, and the forre di Lavello (Lavello ravines) with a small canyon where you can spend a day exploring grottoes, caves, gangways, steps, bridges and waterways.
The hamlet of Gioia Sannitica houses the Piana delle Pesche (Peaches Plain), an evocative place with huge trees and wild horses. The best period to visit this evocative place is definitely autumn, as the leaves turn red.
The parco del Matese is full of paths, that you can spot on the map of the paths at parcoregionaledelmatese.it
