Visit Capua near Caserta

When Saracens ransacked the ancient Capua, residents moved northward, to the ancient Casilinum site, where the modern Capua in Caserta was founded by the Lombards.

Walking around the historic centre of Capua you will reach the Ponte Romano (Roman Bridge) over the Volturno river that, together with the towers of Federico II, was the gate to the city.

Around the city there are many historic buildings such as the Castello dei principi normanni (Norman Princes Castle) that was built with the stones of the ancient Capua’s amphitheatre, the Palazzo Fieramosca (Fieramosca Palace), the Palazzo del Municipio (City Hall Palace), the Castello di Carlo V (Castle of Carlo V), the teatro Ricciardi (Ricciardi theatre) and the Reale sala d’armi borbonica (Bourbon Royal armoury).

Another must-visit place is the Museo provinciale campano di Capua (Capua’s Campania Provincial Museum),  that keeps a very rare collection of matres matutae, besides many finds of Capua’s history.

This small city near Caserta is also rich in churches, that are all around the city, such as the beautiful Duomo, known as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral) that houses the museo diocesano di Capua (Capua Diocesan Museum).
