Cetara, a small fishermen village on the Amalfi Coast, is located between Vietri Sul Mare and Maiori and, compared to other small villages that stud the coast, it is less for tourist and more genuine.
It is worth visiting for its small typical beaches, its famous anchovies (and fish in general), and its beauty that seems frozen in time.
If you want to visit Cetara, when you get to Salerno by train (no matter from where) from the Salerno central train station you take the SITA Sud bus that goes to Amalfi, and take off at Cetara.
If you prefer traveling by car, even if it’s not highly recommended, due to the lack of parking in summer, arrive in Vietri Sul Mare by the A1 motorway from Naples, take the ss 163 and after 5 km you’ll reach Cetara.
You can immediately see the Torre Vicereale (the Viceroyal Tower) from the 16th century, better known as Torre di Cetara o Torretta (the Tower of Cetara or Turret), considered Cetara symbol standing perched on the cliff. What was once a lookout tower for enemy fleets, today is a place open to the public where you can visit its several terraces and the Museum it houses.
While visiting the village of Cetara, stop by the Chiesa di San Pietro (the St. Peter’s Church) that dates back to late 10th century and built in the Baroque style, and then take a walk along the small and evocative marina of Cetara.
THE ANCHOVIES OF CETARA
Cetara is a village of fishermen and it’s famous because of its fresh fish, above all its renowned anchovies and the red tuna of Cetara. The anchovies of Cetara have to be tried in the typical fried “cuoppo”(a yellow paper cone), alternatively you can enjoy them with spaghetti in the famous anchovy sauce style (colatura di alici).
The beaches of Cetara are basically three, each of them small and with a clear and calm sea: the first one you encounter coming from Vietri Sul Mare is the beach of Lannio right at the base of the Torre Vicereale (the Viceroyal Tower), then there is the beach of the Marina, the main one, and finally the beach of Port, that you can reach walking through the marina of Cetara.
