In Ascea there is the parco archeologico di Elea-Velia (Elea-Velia Archaeological Park), that keeps the remains of Elea, a Magna Graecia city linked to the masters of the Eleatic school Parmenide and Zenone; it was turned into Velia during the Roman period.
A very important site, complementary to the parco archeologico di Paestum (Paestum Archaeological Park).
The path through the area archeologica di Elea-Velia starts in Porta Marina (Door Marine) and proceed through several areas of the ancient city, such as the harbour’s area, the Hellenistic and Roman thermal baths, the agora, the acropolis, several districts and Porta Rosa (Door Rose), a monumental gate that is the most ancient Italian example of round arch.
During the walk, you can enjoy a guide (the ticket includes a guided tour) that will tell you everything about the story and the evolution of the Elea city.
The walk is pretty demanding (there are many height differences), be sure to wear proper shoes and try to avoid too hot days.
