Discovering the jewels of the priceless treasure of San Gennaro
Next to the Cathedral of Naples there is a place full of history and devotion: the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro, custodian of a true and inestimable treasure of a saint to whom the entire city of Naples made a vow, who proved to be merciful and generous with that devout people.
The museum of the treasure of San Gennaro houses a real treasure made of jewels, statues, paintings, silver and fine fabrics.
Among the objects of greatest interest are the Necklace of the treasure of San Gennaro enriched for 250 by gifts for the Saint from kings, popes, nobles and common people, the miter of San Gennaro in which 3964 precious stones are set, the silver and coral cross of the Mediterranean.
In the hall of the ten wonders there are the most important gifts of the kings for San Gennaro, and in the other rooms there are busts and silver statues.
Near the museum you will find the Pio Monte della Misericordia chapel and the archaeological excavations of San Carminiello ai Mannesi.
The main altar of the Chapel of San Gennaro houses the ampoules with the blood of the Saint set in the gold and silver reliquary commissioned by King Robert of Anjou.
Blood is the protagonist of the miracle of San Gennaro known throughout the world, an event deeply felt by Neapolitans but also by non-Neapolitans who are fascinated by it. 3 times a year the ampoules are taken out and shown to the people and the Archbishop of Naples, if the blood liquefies, and therefore the miracle occurs, everything will be fine for the Neapolitan people, while the non-liquefaction of the blood is a harbinger of misfortune and bad luck.
