An important crossroads

The village of Ariano Irpino, north of Avellino, played an important role during Middle Ages. It is dominated by the majestic Castello normanno (Ariano Irpino’s Norman Castle), a former impregnable fortress that once was an intersection between Irpinia, Sannio and Puglia.

THE CASTLE AND THE MUNICIPAL VILLA

Surrounded by the nature of the municipal villa, the Ariano Irpino’s norman castle was originally built by Lombards and then modified by Normans, Angevins and Aragons. Nowadays, it consists of a trapezoidal plan fortress surrounded by four watching towers, with the ruins of the fortified tower on the upper side. On the inside, the castle houses the Museo della civiltà normanna (Norman Civilization Museum).

Enjoy a walk around the municipal villa surrounded by nature, overlooking the valle dell’Ufita (Ufita Valley), with a breathtaking view that includes the Santuario di Montevergine (Montevergine Shrine) up to the Monti Lattari (Lattari Mounts).

Moreover, the city quarters of Ariano Irpino are full of inns and taverns where you can have some meat, local products and pizza, such as the Varanalle tavern surrounded by nature that offers great homemade food, prime steaks and chestnut hot cakes.
