The village of Ariano Irpino, north of Avellino, played an important role during Middle Ages. It is dominated by the majestic Castello normanno (Ariano Irpino’s Norman Castle), a former impregnable fortress that once was an intersection between Irpinia, Sannio and Puglia.

Nowadays, it consists of a trapezoidal plan fortress surrounded by four watching towers, with the ruins of the fortified tower on the upper side.
