Between mountains and springs

Within the wonderful Montella area, among mountains and springs, there is the San Francesco a Folloni Monastery, a Franciscan monastery that became a national monument. According to legend, it was founded by the “poor saint”.

VISITING THE SAN FRANCESCO A FOLLONI MONUMENTAL COMPLEX

Within the wood of Folloni there is the museum-monastery founded by San Francesco himself that, according to legend, went to Montella in 1222. He asked for a shelter at the castle as it was snowing, but the castellan sent him away. So the saint, together with other Franciscans, spent the night in the wood of Folloni, under a holm oak that was spared by the snow storm. After the holm oak miracle, people of Montella asked the saint to found a Franciscan monastery right there, in the wood, where that extraordinary event happened.

Nowadays, the San Francesco a Folloni Monastery includes a Baroque-rococo style church rich in refined plasters that houses a 14th century apse and a 15th century bell tower, the museum that keeps decors, ceramics, furnishings, fabrics, prints, silvers and relics, the library and the apartment of King Umberto II that was hosted by the Franciscans more than once.
