Smell of sulfur

The famous Solfatara of Pozzuoli is one of the 40 ancient volcanoes located within the Regional Park of the Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei), a protected volcanic area in continuous evolution.

Visiting the Solfatara means immersing yourself in a magical place out of time… and that smells of sulfur.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Solfatara is about 3 km from the center of Pozzuoli, it can be reached by the Naples L2 metro that stops at Pozzuoli-Solfatara. From here you can reach the entrance of the volcano by walking for about 800 meters or by taking the local bus P9.

An alternative is to take the L1 metro and get off at Piazzale Tecchio in Fuorigrotta, from here the M1B buses leave that stop at the entrance of the Solfatara of Pozzuoli.

In addition, from Piazza Municipio in Naples, only on weekends, the open-top City Sight Seeing buses that stop at the Solfatara volcano are active.

VISIT TO THE POZZUOLI SOLFATARA

The visit to the Solfatara of Pozzuoli starts from the crater area of the volcano surrounded by fumaroles, and nestled in the arid and white earth in the center of which there is a lake of boiling mud.
This area is in continuous evolution, in fact small “volcanoes” often appear such as the mud pit that reaches 100°C or the Bocca Grande that reaches 160°C.

In the area of the solfatara there is also the 10-meter deep mineral water well, and the ancient stoves, that is, natural caves that were used as saunas in which to carry out thermal treatments.

The solfatara is located in a naturalistic oasis rich in flora and fauna.

At the end of the walk in the oasis of the solfatara, which lasts about 45 minutes, you can refresh yourself in the refreshment point located among the fresh branches of the trees.
