Patronal feast of Saint Matthew in Salerno

On September 21, Salerno fills up with the faithful, citizens and tourists, for the feast of Saint Matthew, the patron saint of the city, who is credited with saving the coasts of Salerno from the attack of Saracen pirates in 1500.

The celebration of Saint Matthew is deeply felt by the people of Salerno and begins well before September 21st, in fact already a month before, on August 21st, a ritual known as the Alzata del panno takes place, when the painting portraying the patron saint saying “Salerno is mine and I defend it” is exposed to the people.

A week before the celebration, then, the typical dish of the event begins to be cooked: stuffed spleen, a culinary specialty from Salerno whose unmistakable smell pervades the streets of the city.

September 21st is the day of celebrations, after the mass at the Cathedral the statue of Saint Matthew is placed on a small shoulder altar and is carried in procession through the streets of the historic center, followed by many faithful.
The event includes numerous stalls selling food and typical products, concerts, popular music and the traditional fireworks at sea that end the celebration.
