Montella is a small town east of Avellino, within the Parco Regionale dei Monti Picentini (Picentini Mountains Tegional Park) area. It is famous thanks to its waterfalls and the Biopark of Montella, that includes the Fattoria Rosabella (Rosabella Farm), a must-visit place for tourists.
The Fattoria Rosabella, at the entrance of the biopark of Montella, has a private car park where you can leave your car all day long for just € 3,00.
This farm is within a centuries-old chestnut grove area crossed by the Calore river that houses many different local animal species. There are many water springs, originating brooks and waterfalls, including the cascata della Madonella (Virgin Mary Waterfall), a hidden waterfall that you can reach by a short path from the Fattoria Rosabella. You can also have a swim in the cold pond at the base of the waterfall, so bring a swimsuit and proper shoes with you.
There are several waterfalls in Montella such as the cascata della Lavandaia (Laundress waterfall) right next to the mill’s remains, the cascata del Fascio (Bundle waterfall), a 8 metres waterfall with a bridge above, and the cascate della Tufara (Tufara waterfalls), with peculiar basins.
Within the Fattoria Rosabella biopark area there are picnic tables, toilets, barbecues to grill some meat, a small kiosk selling local products that you can even reserve, such as the mozzarella cheese made with the milk from the local brown cattles, the soppressata salami, the aged sausage, 0 km vegetables. Moreover, there also are some relax areas by the river and at the base of the waterfall, an educational farm (reservation is required) where kids can interacts with animals and nature, discovering local rural traditions.
When visiting the biopark be sure to have a towel, swimsuits, proper shoes, folding beach chairs to seat by the river, food and drinks with you.
On weekends the biopark is overcrowded so the best period to enjoy it is from Monday to Thursday.
To reach the Montella Biopark and waterfalls you have to drive along the A16 highway and take the exit signposted Avellino est, then proceed along the SS400 state road up to Montella.
Take the SS7 state road towards Montella centro and then continue along the SS152 state road towards the biopark, that is right before the Santuario del Santissimo Salvatore (Saint Saviour Shrine).
