Masseta path

The Masseta Coast offers amazing landscapes, for it is surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and it is also rich in grottoes and beaches bordering the crystal clear sea of the Area marina protetta Costa degli Infreschi and della Masseta marine protected area. 

From the Pianoro di Ciolandrea, not far from the Santuario di Pietrasanta (Pietrasanta Shrine) in San Giovanni a Piro, a downhill road takes to the sea, going through the Mediterranean scrub, proceeding up to Torre Spinosa (Thorny Tower) and diverting towards Grotta dell’acqua (Water Grotto), rich in stalactites and stalagmites, and the underlying beach. Once you got there, come back following the directions to Scario passing through the spiaggia della Molara (Molara Beach), where you can have a swim in the crystal clear sea of Masseta. 

This path will take you around 4 hours (10 km), so bring some water, food and proper shoes with you. The trail is shady enough, but you better have sun cream and a cap with you. 

From the pianoro di Ciolandrea you can easily get to the spiaggia del Marcellino (Marcellino beach), a small peaceful and relaxing oasis not that popular. The path is pretty demanding due to the difference in height and several overhanging rocks; moreover, once you’ve done relaxing on this beautiful beach you have to come back to the pianoro di Ciolandrea by the same path. Alternatively, you can ask one of the boats that leave from the harbour in Scario and get to the spiaggia del Marcellino to pick you up.
