Chestnut from Sicignano degli Alburni DOP
the chestnuts from Sicignano degli Alburni
Among the valleys along the Tanagro river there are the Dolomiti del sud (Southern Dolomites), that is the Monti Alburni (Alburni Mountains) where chestnut trees and their delicious fruits rule, together with Mediterranean scrub and beech trees.
To celebrate the delicious chestnuts from the Alburni mountains, every year the chestnut of Sicignano degli Alburni fair (Sicignano degli Alburni Chestnut Festival) takes place: three days of roast chestnuts, local food and fun.
The village of Sicignano degli Alburni is not far from Contursi and the Oasi WWF di Persano (Persano WWF Oasis); to reach it just drive along the A2 highway and take the exit signposted Buccino-Sicignano, then keep going up to Scorzo and proceed towards Sicignano.
If you are planning to spend a weekend in Sicignano, don’t miss the chance to visit the nearby villages, such as Buccino, San Gregorio Magno and the Castelcivita Grottoes.
Right in Sicignano, the Sicignano chestnut fair curated by Pro Loco Monti Alburni has been taking place for 50 years, during one of the weekends of October.
During this three days festival you can have some delicious chestnuts and great local food, while dancing and enjoying several street artists shows and the traditional corsa delle carrette (carts race), you can also take a walk around the historic centre or the Castello Giusso del Galdo (Giusso del Galdo Castle). An autumn event you can’t miss!
