One day at the Ferriere Valley in Amalfi

If you love nature and trekking, the Ferriere Valley on the Amalfi Coast, near Amalfi and Pontone, is almost a must-see. What will you find? Streams, waterfalls, ancient flowers and centuries-old ferns, salamanders, remains of ancient paper mills, stairways and landscapes of uncontaminated nature that will remain etched in your memory for life.

The routes of the Ferriere Valley are varied and range from easy to difficult hiking levels, with the number of kilometers to travel also varying.

The path starting from Amalfi towards the Ferriere Valley is considered the easy one, the CAI name is “path 325 CAIML Sentiero basso di Valle delle Ferriere”.

The departure is from Amalfi in Piazza Flavio Gioia where the path 325 begins that will lead to the Riserva Naturale Orientata whose entrance fee is 5 euros.

The path from Amalfi towards the Ferriere Valley is 3.2 km long and lasts about an hour, the advice if you have children with you is that they are at least 6 years old; along the road you will find various points for water supplies, so bring your water bottle with you.

The path starting from Pontone towards Ferriere Valley is to be considered the intermediate one, whose CAI name is “trail 323a from Pontone to Rudere della Ferriera”.

This first part of the trail, uphill, is 1.7 km long and takes only half an hour to walk; at the end of trail 323a, at Ruderi della Ferriera, you will find a fork in the road. To return towards Amalfi you need to take trail 325 and go down.

In total, the excursion from Pontone towards Ferriere Valley with a descent to Amalfi lasts about 4 hours, and is for people who are not experts but at least trained for long walks. Also in this case along the road you will find various points for water supplies, so bring a water bottle!

The path from San Lazzaro di Agerola towards Ferriere Valley is only for expert walkers, as it lasts 6-7 hours, is about 10 km long, and crosses various CAI paths.

Starting from the votive shrine in Via Santa Lucia di San Lazzaro di Agerola, go up the stone steps and continue straight, then there are two forks where you turn right. After passing the deviation for the Convento dei Compiti (CAI path 369), continue to the junction with the CAI path 301 (Valle delle Ferriere high path).

Once you reach Nespola, and after passing the deviation for Pogerola, go down until you reach the junction with the CAI path 359, here you turn right for the Riserva Valle delle Ferriere and continue to go down to reach the Canneto torrent (CAI path junction 325a).

From here, turn right to continue the descent towards Amalfi, or continue straight if you want to reach the Ferriere Valley Park.
