Right before the small shore of Santa Maria di Castellabate there is the Shrine of Santa Maria a Mare, a shrine dedicated to the village’s patron saint, a place very dear to residents.
You will immediately notice this church, thanks to its tower bell standing out against the small shore landscape and the embossed writing on the facade saying “Shrine of Santa Maria a Mare”.
On the inside, there are three naves, whereas at the centre of the apse there is the statue of the patron saint that, according to legend, was found by some fishermen in the sea of Santa Maria di Castellabate’s shore. Even now, on patron celebration day (August 15th), fishermen carry the statue on their shoulders around the shore sea.
From the shrine, you can easily reach the beach by walking along via Naso.
