Trekking to Mount Epomeo: Walking among the green tuff

Mount Epomeo is the volcanic heart of the island of Ischia whose last eruption dates back to 1302.

Thanks to an explosive eruption that occurred 55,000 years ago, today we have that green tuff characteristic of the entire island of Ischia. Through a trekking path it is possible to walk along the sides of Mount Epomeo.

FROM SERRARA FONTANA TO MOUNT EPOMEO

The sides of Mount Epomeo are full of paths, but the simplest one starts from Piazzetta Fontana in Ferrara Fontana and reaches the top of the mountain via a dirt mule track.

Before reaching the summit you will encounter the Hermitage of San Nicola dug into the green tuff.

The path is quite simple, even if tiring, and lasts only a couple of hours there and back.
Once you reach the top of Mount Epomeo you will enjoy a fantastic view of all of Ischia.

SMARTIP

On the road to Mount Epomeo there is the Miscillo refuge, a souvenir shop where you can also get something to refresh yourself.

WHEN TO WALK THE PATH?

Trekking to Mount Epomeo is an absolute must, especially in the cooler months, such as spring.
Starting from Serrara Fontana you can go straight to the top, or do the first 2 km by car/scooter and only tackle the last stretch of the climb on foot.
The path of Mount Epomeo is quite steep but nothing particularly challenging, it lasts about 30 minutes, and the view amply repays the effort.
