Every year, in Cetara the “notte delle lampare” event takes place. During this event, people have the chance to watch the lampare fishing anchovies, among folk dances and delicious food made with anchovies of Cetara.
The lampara is a lamp used on small boats to light up a wide water area so that the fish are attracted by it and end up in the net. By extension, it is the small boat itself.
The anchovy fishing with the lampare is an ancient method characteristic of the Cetara area. During the notte delle lampare you can attend a traditional fishing excursion from the ferries at attendants’ disposal. The event takes place in July. The precise date depends on the moon’s phases, so important for anchovy fishing.
You can reach the Cetara sea area on the night of the lampare by the dedicated ferries that leave from the Masuccio harbour in Salerno at 8 p.m. or, if you are already in Cetara, you can take one of them at the Madonnina harbour. After the fishing excursion, you will reach Cetara and enjoy the village celebration, among folk music, anchovy cuoppos (a yellow paper cone full of fried anchovies) and typical products tasting. A memorable night!
