Rocca dei Rettori and Benevento municipal villa

On the highest point of the Benevento city centre, in piazza Castello, there is the majestic Rocca dei Rettori, also known as the Castle, not far from the municipal villa of Benevento , an English style green oasis.

The Rocca dei Rettori of Benevento consists of the ancient Lombard big tower and the palace, built by the Papal Chancellors on the model of the French Carcassone fortress.

Nowadays, it serves as Provincial Council offices and houses the historical department of the Museo del Sannio (Sannio museum), besides several temporary exhibitions.

The gardens of the Rocca dei Rettori are open to the public and enriched with sculptures and Roman architecture archaeological finds.

Right in front of the Rocca dei Rettori there is the Benevento municipal villa, that was built in English style during the 19th century as requested by the director of the Neapolitan botanical garden Alfredo Dehnhardt.

The boulevards of the villa are surrounded by centuries-old trees, small lakes, basins, a beautiful cloister and playgrounds.
