The Caserta Royal Palace consists of the Royal Park and the Palace.
The construction begun in 1753, under the supervision of Vanvitelli, in concomitance with the construction of the Acquedotto carolino (Carolino Aqueduct) that would eventually supply water to the fountains around the the royal gardens.
The park of the Caserta’s Royal Palace is a 3 km long park that includes the water path, the old wood and the English garden.
Leaving the Royal Palace, you will access a long boulevard that leads to the Fontana Margherita (Margherita Fountain), the starting point of the evocative water path of the Royal Palace, a walk among the nature and the fountains of the Park, that will charm you with beautiful water features. Right after the Fontana Margherita there are the Fontana dei tre delfini (Three Dolphins Fountain), the Fontana di Eolo (Aeolus Fountain) and the Fontana di Cerere (Ceres Fountain), the Fontana di Venere e Adone (Venus and Adonis Fountain), the Fontana di Diana e Atteone (Artemis and Atteone Fountain), and the Grande Cascata (Great Waterfall) at the end of the water path. The Acquedotto Carolino supplies water to all of the tanks and the fountains of the water path.
Right outside the Royal Palace, before the water path, there is the parterre designed after the French gardens. Left of the parterre there is the old wood, that was there before the Royal Palace was built, with its statues, Roman ruins, the Castelluccia, that is a small tower surrounded by a moat, and the Peschiera, a big artificial basin.
Right of the Great waterfall, at the end of the water path, there is the beautiful Giardino Inglese (English Garden) designed by Carlo Vanvitelli and made by the gardener Graefer as requested by the Queen Maria Carolina d’Austria.
The English garden is the first example of Italian garden and houses several plant types, fountains and waterways supplied by the Carolino Aqueduct. Not far from the greenhouses, there is the Casa del Giardiniere (Gardener’s House) that is an English palace that once used to host Graefer himself.
