The janare of San Lupo

At North of the Taburno-Camposauro park there is the evocative Samnite hamlet of San Lupo, founded by the Benedictine monks and strictly connected to the legend of the janare of Benevento.

San Lupo is just 30 minutes away from the centre of Benevento and you can easily reach it: drive along the SS372 state road towards Contrada Collepiano, take the exit signposted Ponte-Torrecuso and then take the SP106 provincial road to San Lupo.

WHAT TO SEE IN SAN LUPO

The hamlet of San Lupo is a small but still charming mountain hamlet that has been entirely reconstructed at the end of the 17th century after an earthquake destroyed it completely. The historic centre is very evocative, with its narrow streets, the rocky arches, Palazzo Iacobelli (Iacobelli Palace) that was built in 1700 and the 17th century fontana Sant’Angelo (Sant’Angelo fountain).

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is the biggest church of the hamlet, but the Chiesa dell’Annunziata (Annunziata Church) is worth a visit too.

If you want to have some food, stop at the L’arte del pane bakery, where you can try some delicious homemade sweets and excellent bread.

THE JANARE OF SAN LUPO

The small hamlet of San Lupo is strictly connected to the legend of the witches of Benevento; in fact, right after the residential area there is the ponte delle janare (janare’s bridge), overlooking a cliff and a small river.

According to legend, a young girl was charged with witchcraft and eventually drowned in the small river. Her ghost turned into a strega Manolonga (Longhand witch), that lures poor souls to the river, where their bodies disappear forever.

Another famous witch is the janara of San Lupo that, during nighttime, hunts children, killing or crippling them to get revenge on people who offended her. Still today moms living in San Lupo use to put under their children beds some iron or steel objects, holy cards or magical herbs to protect them from the frightful janara.
