A small guide to the most beautiful beaches in Ischia

Ischia is rich in beaches, coves and bays where you can enjoy the crystal clear sea and the warm sun.
The beaches of Ischia are very different from each other; some are sandy, some are full of pebbles and rocks, some others are perfect for balneotherapy thanks to the fumaroles.
In Ischia Ponte there is the Spiaggia dei pescatori, a beach overlooking Castello Aragonese (Aragonese Castle), not too wide, sandy, suitable for families. In the afternoon the sun sets quite soon.
In Ischia Porto there is the Spiaggia di San Pietro; this beach is sandy and not too wide, but it has full facilities and overlooks Procida.
Even if the beach is close to the harbour, the boats are far away; nevertheless sometimes the sea is not that clear.
The Spiaggia di Cartaromana, overlooking Castello Aragonese and the Scogli di Sant’Anna (Sant’Anna Rocks), can be reached from Ischia Ponte by taxi boat; you can also reach it on foot but the path is slippery and arduous. Once the beach was sandy, but over the years the sea flooded it and now there are only rocks and stones left (always wear shoes to protect your feet!).
Here the sea is beautiful and there is a small natural pool full of hot water where you can enjoy some balneotherapy while applying a mud mask; unfortunately, the sun sets pretty soon, around 3 p.m.
In Barano di Ischia there is the Baia della Scarrupata (Scarrupata means crumbled in local dialect); you can reach this bay walking a path (very steep) that starts from the Vatoliere di Barano Church. Once you get to an iron cross take the path on the right and keep on walking until you reach the bay. You can also get there by sea renting a boat in Spiaggia dei Maronti (Maronti Beach).
The wild nature and the turquoise sea you’ll find there will take your breath away. The Scarrupata beach has no sand or pebbles, just rocks so always wear shoes. If you want to have some food, you can go to the La Pace restaurant, a quiet place surrounded by nature. The food is good but also expensive.
In Barano d’Ischia there is the Spiaggia dei Maronti, a 3 km long dark sand free beach with full facilities. You can reach it by the taxi boats that leave from Sant’Angelo.
Here you can see the Fumarole dei Maronti (Maronti Fumaroles), and from there you can reach the terme di Cavascura (Cavascura thermal baths), a relaxing place with natural springs and grottoes dug in the tuff (that is why the Spiaggia dei Maronti is also known as the Spiaggia delle Grotte, Grottoes Beach).
At the entrance of Sant’Angelo there is a bus stop. Starting from here, walk toward via Succhivio and go down the stairs until a small bay nestled in the rocks: the spiaggia di Cava Grado. The beach is divided in two areas: one is a beach with full facilities, the other one is a free beach. You can also swim to the baia di Sorgeto (Sorgeto Bay) from here.
The spiaggia di Citara in Forio is a wide beach with full facilities, and just a small portion of it is a free beach.
As it is west of Ischia, the sun shines until sunset. The beach is a mix of sand and rocks.
The spiaggia della Chiaia is the central beach of Forio. It is a sandy beach and it is divided in two areas: one is a beach with full facilities, the other one is a free beach.
The water is shallow and when the currents are opportune there are no seaweeds. Since it is the central beach, it gets easily crowded; if you find it too crowded you can move northward to the spiaggia di San Francesco (San Francesco Beach) in Forio.
In Lacco Ameno, near the Negombo thermal park, there is the spiaggia di San Montano, a light beige beach surrounded by wild nature, that is divided in two areas: one is a beach with full facilities, the other one is a free beach.
Further ahead there is another inlet with golden sand, but it can be reached only by sea. Its name is spiaggia di Varulo (Varulo beach) and it is the kingdom of the Aplysia depilans and the Neptune grass.
During the summer, Ischia’s beaches are very crowded, but Ischia is also very rich in coves and beaches, so for every full beach you find there will always be a quieter corner by walking a little.
