The first village of the Amalfi Coast you meet proceeding from Salerno towards Positano is Vietri sul Mare, a small village perched on the hill that expands all the way down to the sea; the only village whose beach has sand instead of pebbles.

HOW TO REACH VIETRI SUL MARE

To reach Vietri sul Mare you need first to get to Salerno by bus or by train, then from Salerno you can take the number 4 or 9 CSTP buses and get off at Vietri.

WHAT TO SEE IN VIETRI SUL MARE

When you visit Vietri sul mare, at the entrance of Vietri, right before entering the village, there is the majestic Solimene Ceramics building designed by the architect Soleri; you can visit the plant and buy some colorful ceramics.

Among the alleys of Vietri there is the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, a church built in the 17th century, with a peculiar bell tower covered in coloured ceramics.

As you will soon notice, Vietri is famous for its ceramics. Speaking of which, the Museo provinciale della Ceramica di Vietri sul Mare is worth a visit. It is in the upper side of Vietri, in the Raito hamlet, hosted by a villa (Villa Guariglia) overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. Here you can enjoy the wonderful ceramics recalling the history of the ceramic art of Vietri.

WHAT TO DO IN VIETRI SUL MARE

After a walk around the old town, you can visit the beautiful Villa Comunale of Vietri sul Mare, compared to the Parc Guell of Barcellona more than once. It is a terrace overlooking the sea, rich in ceramics, with a breathtaking view and an amphitheatre that hosts performances and concerts.

You can also enjoy a day at the beach at one of the many lidos even if the sea is not that crystal clear as anywhere else on the coast. Walking from the Marina (sea) area towards the centre of the village, right after the Bristol Hotel, you will find the Torre Crestarella; from the beach of this sixteenth-century tower you can see the “due fratelli” (two brothers), two small stacks in the middle of the sea in front of Vietri.
