The Amalfi Coast is famous also because of its coloured ceramics and Vietri Sul Mare is worldwide renowned for its hand-painted ceramics, that depict the typical colours of both the Mediterranean sea and the Amalfi Coast.
The whole city of Vietri sul Mare is decorated with the beautiful ceramics, especially the villa comunale that is right at the entrance of the village.
The colours of the prestigious hand-painted ceramics portray those of the Mediterranean nature: the yellow of the Amalfi sfusato (a kind of lemon), the green of the Mediterranean scrub, the blue of the sea.
Each piece of the Vietri ceramics is unique and shows the peculiar imperfections of the handmade process. First, the clay is shaped, then it is fired and finally it is glazed and decorated.
Both the marina area and the historical centre area of the village are full of craft shops where you can buy a piece of the Vietri ceramics. You can choose among plates, glasses, tiles, party favours, tiny statues and they are all cheap.
You can also visit the historical laboratory of one of the most famous pottery manufacturers in Vietri: Ceramica Artistica Solimene. The building is right at the entrance of the village and you will recognise it by its unique cone shape.
One of the most popular pieces to buy is the six hand-painted shot glasses set perfect to enjoy a limoncello liqueur. You can put the glasses in the freezer and then have an ice-cold limoncello liqueur.
