The Frassitelli forest, a small acacia forest, is the preamble to the Falanga forest, a chestnut forest located along the western side of Mount Epomeo in Ischia.
From the square of Serrara Fontana (Piazzale Fontana) take the path that goes towards the Frassitelli forest, easily recognizable by the large quantity of acacias present.
During the walk in the Frassitelli, at a certain point you come across an arch made of stones that would be the door that leads to Mount Epomeo.
At the end of the Frassitelli you immediately take via Nuova Falanga to reach the Falanga forest, a chestnut grove where you will find stone houses dug into the tuff, which served as shelter for farmers. You will realize that you have left the Falanga forest when the vegetation begins to become scarce, and you will find yourself in front of Santa Maria al Monte, from where the descent to the valley begins.
The Frassitelli-Falanga forest trek lasts about 4 hours there and back and is of medium difficulty, always bring a water bottle and snacks with you, and wear technical clothing.
In the Frassitelli area, there is the Tiphus’mouth trail that starts from Panza to Forio.
At the Montecorvo plain, an uphill trail (the Fumarole trail) starts that leads to the fumaroles and finally to the Tiphus’ mouth, a place from which the view is spectacular and where you can touch the volcanic activity of Ischia with your hand.
From the Frassitelli stone arch it is possible to make a detour and take the path to reach the Pietra dell’acqua up to the top of Mount Epomeo.
