Benevento: Visit the Birthplace of Padre Pio

In the heart of the small town of Pietrelcina, at 28 Vico Storto Valle, there is the birthplace of Padre Pio, also known as the house-museum, where the saint was born and which today is a destination for pilgrimages from all over Italy.

To get to Padre Pio’s birthplace in Pietrelcina by car from the north, take the A14, exit at Termoli-Molise and continue towards Boiano-Benevento-Pietrelcina; from Naples, take the A1, exit at Caianello, continue towards Telese-Benevento-Pietrelcina; from the south, take the A16, exit at Benevento, then exit at Benevento ovest and take the SS 212 towards Pietrelcina.

Once you have arrived in Pietrelcina and parked your car, from the central square of SS Annunziata, walk to via Prof. Marone and then turn right onto via Pantaniello to get to Padre Pio’s home in vico Storto Valle.

To get to Pietrelcina by train, you must first reach Benevento central station, and from there take the ETAC bus towards San Bartolomeo in Saldo or towards San Marco dei Cavoti, which stop in Pietrelcina.

At the time when little Francesco Forgione was born, it was customary to buy not houses, but rooms. In fact, the visit to the Birthplace of Padre Pio includes the kitchen and dining room at number 28, the bedroom of Francesco’s parents at number 32 where the child was born, and where there is a trap door that leads to what was the stable for the donkey with which father Grazio Forgione went to the countryside to work, precisely in Piana Romana along what is now known as the “Rosary Path”.

Finally, there is the Torretta, a small room located at the end of a staircase where Padre Pio prayed and studied.
