A Baroque explosion

The majestic Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta e San Modestino, also known as Avellino’s Cathedral, is the majestic Baroque-style church right in the middle of the city historic centre, not far from the Torre dell’orologio (Clock Tower), one of the symbols of Avellino.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE AVELLINO’S CATHEDRAL

The Avellino’s Cathedral was built in 1166, when the remains of San Modestino were found, as requested by the Bishop Roberto. After several changes, nowadays it looks like a beautiful church with Baroque-style interiors, with its three naves and ten side chapels, including the cappella del tesoro di San Modestino (San Modestino’s Treasure Chapel).

The cripta della Madonna dei sette dolori (The Seven Sorrows of Mary Crypt) is a Romanesque-style crypt with 18th century paintings, that houses the mortuary sacellum and the tunnels dug by the Lombards.

The Avellino’s Cathedral is very dear to Avellino people, being the heart of the Irpinia religiousness.
