Montesarchio Hamlet And Castle in Benevento

On the Ciaurno hill, in the medieval hamlet of Montesarchio there is the lookout of the Valle Caudina, the Castello e torre di Montesarchio (Montesarchio Castle and Tower) that nowadays houses the Museo archeologico del Sannio Caudino (Sannio Caudino Archaeological Museum).

You can reach it from Benevento in less than 40 minutes driving along the SS7 state road.

The hamlet of Montesarchio consists of two areas: Latovetere is the most ancient area of the village, that endured the Samnite, Roman and Lombard domination; Latonuovo is the area west of Montesarchio, that developed under the Norman domination.

In the upper area of the hamlet there are the Castle and the Tower of Montesarchio; the castle was built by the Lombards and the Bourbons turned it into a prison where Carlo Poerio, a Risorgimento hero, was jailed. Whereas nowadays it houses the museo archeologico nazionale del Sannio Caudino, with an incredible collection of finds from the main Samnite cities, including the ratto di Europa (Europa abduction), a vase by Assteas, a Greek potter who lived in the 4th century BC, considered “the most beautiful vase in the world”.

In front of the castle there is the tower, that offers a breathtaking view of the whole Valle Caudina.
