The Pertosa-Auletta Caves

The Alburni mountains are carved out by the majestic Pertosa Caves whose tunnels, formed by tectonic phenomena, run beneath the two villages of Auletta and Polla on the northern border of the Cilento National Park.

VISIT TO THE PERTOSA CAVES

The peculiarity of the Pertosa caves is that they are the only ones to be crossed by a freshwater stream, the Negro River, which you will travel on a flat-bottomed boat towed by steel cables that will dock at the beginning of the actual route of the caves.

Once you get off this boat, the walk through the galleries and rooms of the caves will begin, each with a particular name given by the shape of the rocks, stalactites or stalagmites: a true spectacle of nature. Here you will also see the kiss between stalactite and stalagmite… very suggestive!

Given the vastness and beauty of these caves, it was well thought to use them as a stage, in fact theatrical performances are often held here, such as “Ulysses, journey into Hades”, which with the backdrop of the caves become truly magical.

The circuit of the Pertosa caves includes the Museum of the Soil, the speleo-archaeological museum focused on the ancient populations that inhabited these spectacular cavities.

HOW TO GET TO THE PERTOSA CAVES

The Pertosa caves are 60 km from Paestum and 80 km from Salerno, they can be reached via the Mediterranean motorway, exiting at Polla and taking the SS19 to Pertosa, where the signs will indicate the caves. You will know you have arrived when you see the large parking lot and the brick ticket office.

SMARTIP

The guided tour lasts an hour and is suitable for everyone, in the caves it is about 16° so bring a sweater or a k-way with you.
