Ascea and Ascea marina: Sea and history

Ascea and Marina di Ascea are right after Casal Velino and right before Pisciotta. These towns are two very popular destinations for summer holidays thanks to the wide golden sand beach and the Velia archaeological site.

WHAT TO SEE IN ASCEA

The beach of Ascea Marina is a very long sandy beach that goes from Punta Telegrafo to Marina di Casalvelino. It is a wide strip of sand that offers both a free beach and an area with full facilities, a crystal clear sea, and many sea-daffodils. Just behind the beach there is the seafront of Ascea, a long boardwalk perfect for walking or riding bikes.

Within the Ascea Marina area there is the Parco archeologico di Velia-Elea (Velia-Elea Archaological Park), best known as Scavi di Velia, where you can discover the history of Elea, a big Magna Graecia city, the birthplace of the Eleatic school as well. The Scavi di Velia are part of the Parco Archeologico di Paestum (Paestum Archaeological Park) complex; in fact, you can buy a single pass for both the sites.

Whereas, walking up the hill, you can reach the districts of Catona, Mandia and Terradura, with their small late medieval historic centre and the Santuario del Monte Carmelo (Carmelo Mount’s Shrine).

SMARTIP

In Ascea you can trek along either the sentiero degli innamorati (Lovers path) or the sentiero Aurella (Aurella path) that leads to the Giardino degli ulivi (Olive trees Garden).

HOW TO REACH ASCEA

To reach Ascea by car just drive along the A3 SA-RC highway and take the exit signposted Battipaglia, proceed along the SS 18 state road towards Vallo Scalo, then follow the directions to Ascea.

If you prefer traveling by train, you can take one of the Roma-Reggio Calabria trains that leave from both the Salerno train station and the Napoli train station and get off at Ascea Marina.
