Amalfi Coast Fried fish: the Cuoppo
The famous fried fish typical of the Amalfi Coast
A must on the Amalfi Coast is the fried fish “cuoppo” that can be tasted in every village on the coast, but in particular in Cetara and Amalfi.
The fried fish cuoppo is part of the street food of the Amalfi Coast and consists of fried fish served in a yellow paper cone, which in dialect is called “cuoppo”.
The classic cuoppo includes anchovies, calamari, shrimp and cod, all fried and salted to perfection.
The fried fish cuoppo can be found more or less along the entire Campania coast, but it is in Cetara and Amalfi that the magic happens.
It is said that the first cuopperia was born in Cetara, and perhaps that is why in this small village on the Amalfi Coast the cuoppo is so extraordinarily good. All the places here make fried fish, including La Frittura del Golfo, the Cuopperia del Convento, and Marepizza.
In Amalfi instead there is the historic (and crowded) Cuoppo D’Amalfi, which offers various types of cuoppo. Less known is the fishmonger and fryer CICA (via Pietro Capuano 17), where the cuoppi are excellent and plentiful and the prices are very honest.
If you are unsure about which cuoppo to get, always choose the classic one with calamari, anchovies and prawns.
