Three villages set between sea and rocks

On the Sorrento Coast, between Vico Equense and Sorrento, there are three evocative small villages  with beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea that are worth a visit: Meta, Piano di Sorrento and Sant’Agnello.

To get there you have to drive along the 145 state road towards Sant’Agnello, or you can take the Napoli-Torre Annunziata-Sorrento circumvesuviana train.

META DI SORRENTO

Meta di Sorrento is a small maritime village overlooking the Gulf of Napoli. It is symbolically divided in two areas: Meta di Sopra, which is the hills area, and Meta di Sotto, which is the area near the sea.

In Meta di Sotto there is the historic centre of Meta, a calm place rich in 18th century villas, where you can visit the Basilica di Santa Maria del Lauro, a church with a Baroque style bell tower.

The beach of Meta di Sorrento is one of the widest beaches of the Sorrento Coast and it is divided in two areas, Marina di Alimuri and Meta Mare, both with full facilities. The only difference is that one is a sandy beach and the other one is a pebble beach.

SMARTIP

Meta, Piano di Sorrento and Sant’Agnello are good alternatives to Sorrento if you are looking for a relaxing holiday to discover the Sorrento Peninsula, Pompei and the Amalfi Coast  (well connected to each other).

PIANO DI SORRENTO

Piano di Sorrento is a natural ledge that overlooks the Gulf of Napoli.

Walking along it you can visit the Baroque style church Basilica di San Michele Arcangelo, and the Villa Fondi de Sangro, a villa built in the 1840 that has a huge park overlooking the sea and houses the Museo archeologico della Penisola Sorrentina Georges Vallet (George Vallet archaeological museum of the Sorrento Peninsula) where all the relics discovered during the peninsula excavations are kept.

The beach of Piano di Sorrento is in Marina di Cassano, a small fishermen hamlet. You can reach the sandy and rocky beach by climbing a steep cliff.

SANT’AGNELLO

Right before Sorrento there is Sant’Agnello, a village that houses the Oasi in Città (City Oasis), a real natural oasis with a lake and a playground, and the Chiesa di San Prisco e Agnello (San Prisco and Agnello Church), the two saints protecting the village. Near the bay of the Golfo del Pecoriello (Gulf of Pecoriello), an inlet along the tuff crag that enables to enjoy a breathtaking view, there is the ancient Il Pizzo estate which is full of citrus and olive tree groves.

The beach of Sant’Agnello is named La Marinella; it is a very evocative sandy beach with a platform overlooking the Gulf of Napoli.
